Better Education Will Prevent Pressure Ulcers

Pressure ulcers have been a major focus for both central Government and the Department of Health over the last 18 months.  The visibility of this often hidden condition is increase in the general population.

ith this increased visibility comes a new challenge for healthcare professionals.  Preventing pressure ulcers is now equally as important as preventing MRSA and CDif but the reality is there are far fewer resources to do this with.

Earlier this year the Daily Mail printed an article ‘naming and shaming’ hospital Trusts with high incidents of pressure ulcers (link to article here).  Whilst Your Turn applauds the paper for raising this crucial issue into the public psyche, we do question the helpfulness of this type of league table reporting.

In our experience no two Trusts measure and report on pressure ulcers in the same way, making it impossible to compare Trusts like with like.  The reality on the ground is that pressure ulcers do occur both in hospital and in the community and one of the most powerful weapons in combating this is education.

Your Turn is committed to working with organisations throughout the UK to bring comprehensive education programmes to those who are at risk of developing pressure ulcers and those who are responsible for their care.
